This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.
Scientific Name:
Juniperus virginiana
Cultivar:
Native to:
East and central North America
Mature Height and Width:
40-50 feet by 8-20 feet
Additional Notes:
Eastern red cedar dominates many abandoned pastures across much of the Midwest, often leading to indistinct thickets of small trees that suppress other plant species. However when grown individually, eastern red cedar can be a visually striking, low maintenance asset, even in drought-prone and depleted urban soils. Originating at the time when this part of campus was less cultivated, this tree exudes rugged persistence.
