This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Scientific Name:
Pinus strobus

Cultivar:

Native to:
Newfoundland to Manitoba, south to Georgia, Illinois and Iowa

Mature Height and Width:
50-80 feet by 20-40 feet, can reach 150 feet high

Additional Notes:
Although not native to southern Illinois, and often struggling in our heavy soils, Eastern white pine is prized as a landscape tree due to its stately form and longevity under the right conditions.  Prized for ship masts by the British Navy, tension over harvest of the finest white pine tree in the northeastern United States, helped set the stage for the American Revolution, even if tea gets the credit.
