This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Dozens of apple species and countless unique hybrids are found where these species are native while others have been cultivated by breeders. Some produce large, palatable fruit and others a wide array of flower colors, sizes and shapes. In many species, the term apple and crabapple are used interchangeably.
