Although not native to southern Illinois, and often struggling in our heavy soils, Eastern white pine is prized as a landscape tree due to its stately form and longevity under the right conditions. Prized for ship masts by the British Navy, tension over harvest of the finest white pine tree in the northeastern United States, helped set the stage for the American Revolution, even if the tax on tea gets all the credit.
