SIU 150th logo

This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Scientific Name:
Picea abies

Cultivar:

Native to:
Northern, Central and Eastern Europe

Mature Height and Width:
40-60 feet by 25-30 feet

Additional Notes:
A stately native of Europe, forests of this species evoke images of the deep, dark woods of the Grimm Fairy Tales and others of similar tradition.  Here in North America, Norway spruce typically thrives in cooler and more consistently moist climates, but can struggle during the hot summers of southern Illinois, especially on drought-prone soils.
