SIU 150th logo

This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Scientific Name:
Carya illinoinensis

Cultivar:

Native to:
Iowa to Indiana Alabama, Texas, Mexico

Mature Height and Width:
70-100 feet by 40-70 feet

Additional Notes:
Few images more strongly evoke the settled southern landscape than a pecan tree.  While few pecan trees growing in the wild produce a nut that is palatable, generations of tree breeding, almost certainly stretching deep into Native American dominance of the Midwestern landscape, have given us the tasty and easily accessed nut meat we associate with modern pecans.
