This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Scientific Name:
Pyrus calleryana

Cultivar:

Native to:
Korea and China

Mature Height and Width:
30-50 feet by 20-35 feet

Additional Notes:
Many varieties of Callery pear have been developed from this east Asian native because of their ease of cultivation, rapid growth, and abundant flowering.  Over time, arborists have soured on this species because the branches are weak and prone to breakage.  More recently, varieties of this species have naturally interbred and produced viable seed that, when spread by birds, can invade natural areas and outcompete native vegetation.  So please, we ask that you content yourself with a look at this Callery pear tree and resolve to never, ever, plant one of your own.
