Maintained privet hedges provide hardy natural barriers and shrub habitat patches in urban areas. However, like many now popular species introduced into new environments, Amur privet is native to northern China, seeds can spread and lead to the development of new populations that compete with native plants for growing space. There are no records of Amur privet becoming invasive in Illinois at this time.
