This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.

Native to:
Newfoundland to Florida, west to Minnesota,Oklahoma and Texas

Mature Height and Width:
40-60 feet by 30-50 feet, can reach 100 feet high

Additional Notes:
Red maple is perhaps the most versatile tree species in the eastern deciduous forests in terms of the types of soils and moisture conditions where it can thrive and compete with other tree species, particularly following canopy disturbance.  In our region, red maple is usually associated with poorly drained soils.
