This tree is one of the 150 trees initially included in the arboretum to coincide with the campus's 150th anniversary celebration.
Scientific Name:
Quercus palustis
Cultivar:
Native to:
Massachusetts to Delaware, west to Wisconsin and Arkansas
Mature Height and Width:
60-70 feet by 25-40 feet, can reach 100 feet high
Additional Notes:
The fastest growing oak native to Illinois, massive individuals are often only tens of years old and seldom live past seventy years before becoming structurally unstable. Still, pin oak has the ability to tolerate poorly drained urban soils and, with its characteristically symmetrical growth in open conditions, this species is a mainstay of cultured park, campus, and residential landscapes.
